Course Contents/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

　日本在来の神祇信仰に、像を作る文化はありませんでした。かたちのない神を、神木や巨岩などの依代、鏡などの形代によって祀っていたと考えられます。像を作ることは、仏教の伝来以降、仏像の影響を受けてはじまります。文献で知られる最も古い神像は奈良時代のもの、現存するのは平安時代以降のものです。
　神のかたちというと、例えば、映画『千と千尋の神隠し』に登場する様々な姿の「神さま」をイメージするかも知れませんが、平安時代に作られた神像は、それらとはかなり異なる姿をしています。そもそも、神のために仏像を作ったり、人が神に位を授けたり、古代・中世における人・神・仏の関係は、多くの現代人の理解とは異なるものでした。
　この講義では、平安時代に作られた神仏の彫像の中から、いくつかの具体的作例を取り上げて、そのかたちと背後にある思想・信仰について考えます。個々の作例をよりよく理解することを第一の目標にしつつ、人と神と仏が、かつてこの国でどのような関係を結んでいたのか、その具体相を探ります。
