Course DescriptionMusic courses offered at Hiyoshi Campus explore a variety of topics in the field of music within the context of liberal arts education. They range from the Western music of the baroque period to the world music of the modern times. Most classes are lectures, but seminars are also available. In addition, music performance is valued; students may participate in advanced-level ensemble classes.

Course Contents/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

This class is designed to introduce students to the history of jazz. It is also aimed to increase their understanding of and appreciation for jazz music. Jazz music has stylistically changed over the last 100 years. We will learn the history of jazz from the beginning of jazz to the multiple styles in the present. This is beneficial not only for students who are interested in jazz music but also students who are learning how to play jazz. By participating fully in this class, students will:

- develop their listening skills for enjoying and understanding jazz music.

- become familiar with many of the major figures in jazz.

- engage with other students in classroom discussions.

- deliver in-class presentations.

- improve their English skills.
