授業科目の内容・目的・方法・到達目標
This class will focus on travel writing from English and German speaking countries. All of the texts that will be discussed have been written after 1945 and most of them have pronounced literary qualities. From about the 1970s onwards they display a strong tendency towards hybridity. Students will get acquainted with some of the classic texts of travel writing in the late 20th century, like Bruce Chatwin's "In Patagonia", "The Middle Passage" by V. S. Naipaul and W. G. Sebald's "The Rings of Saturn". We will also deal with some eminent representatives of German-speaking travel writing like Roger Willemsen and Christoph Ransmayr, whose works we will read against the background of the above mentioned classics. And last but not least this course will give a short overview of the history of travel writing, discuss the role of ethnology and topics like orientalism, primitivism and postcolonialism.
