Course Contents/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome
The aim of this course is to help first-year students to learn practices and skills that are pivotal for academic studies at university level.
The course introduces a range of academic skills – analytical reading, academic writing, effective presentation, research skills – and responsible academic practices such as how to avoid plagiarism. In both semesters, students learn and develop these skills through undertaking various assignments. The syllabi in both semesters are designed to guide students in the research process step by step.
- EAS I focuses on the research process that is needed for writing a research paper. Students learn how to conduct research reading (collect, evaluate and record information) on a topic of their choice and present the results of their research in the two main assignments of the course: a review article and an oral presentation.
- Building on what they have learned in EAS I, students undertake a research project in EAS II, with the aim to complete a research paper on the topic of their choice. (Students have the option of working on the topic that they have chosen in EAS I). They present the results of their research in the two main assignments of the course: a research paper and an oral presentation.
By the end of this course, the students will be able to:
- understand features of academic studies;
- take an independent and reflective approach to their learning;
- understand the process of academic research;
More specifically, the students will be able to:
- engage with academic discourses in an analytical and critical manner;
- take a strategic and analytical approach in reading, summarise the texts they read, and formulate critical responses to them;
- identify and locate relevant academic texts and sources of information for their studies;
- use their reading in their own work in responsible and appropriate manner;
- present their arguments in a clear, overall structure, both in writing and oral presentations;
- use the English language accurately and effectively, in a style suitable for academic work;
- engage in and contribute to productive group discussion.
