Course Summary

Do you want to take action for social change but don’t know how to begin?
Do you wonder if your leadership style is appropriate?
Are you interested in democratic leadership or leadership education?

This seminar is for students with such concerns or interests. Together, we will learn and apply leadership theories for social change, reflect on those experiences, and consider how to cultivate leadership in ourselves and others, including methods of leadership education.
Social change cannot be achieved alone. It requires building relationships and collaborating with people of diverse interests and positions. Not in top-down organizations like corporations, but in horizontal relationships—and sometimes even equal relationships with those in positions of power. Since few people are willing to take action amid uncertainty, motivating others and enabling them to act is essential.

We define leadership for social change as:
"Engaging others, building relationships, and enabling people to act."

This seminar follows a cycle:
Reading leadership theories → Practicing them in and outside class → Reflecting on the practice → Applying insights to improve leadership education

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

This seminar emphasizes the practice of leadership for social change and reflection on that practice. The main goals are:
1. To gain awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses in leadership
2. To cultivate leadership in others
We also aim to theorize and develop educational approaches based on what we learn.
Each session after the first focuses on a specific aspect of leadership. Students research assigned topics using the provided reading list, then give a short presentation (within 10 minutes). Afterward, there will be Q&A and discussion. In the second half of class:
• Students with research projects will present them.
• Others will share reflections on leadership they practiced in or outside class (preferably aligned with the weekly theme) and engage in peer feedback and coaching.
