Course Summary

The Research Group on Planetary Sciences aims to tackle research topics that clarify planetary evolution and enhance our understanding of the current state of planets by making full use of planetary science knowledge. In addition, new academic fields are being pioneered based on space and planetary sciences. Specific research themes will be determined through individual discussions. Research is primarily conducted through numerical simulations and the analysis of data from spacecraft and other sources.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

This research group aims to develop problem-solving skills by clarifying the causes of various phenomena occurring in the "planetary sphere" from physical and chemical perspectives. Specifically, we will focus on fundamental research to understand planetary evolution through planetary plasma and atmospheric environments, as well as research topics that aim to understand the "fundamental processes" occurring on planets through the analysis of spacecraft data. In addition, there is an active interest in interdisciplinary research that bridges the sciences and the humanities, with plans to explore and develop new research areas using approaches rooted in the humanities.

In each lecture of the research group, students will engage in discussions using study materials, practical exercises in numerical simulations or data analysis, and work on individual research projects. While a background in physics or mathematics is desirable, this is not a strict requirement for those interested in humanities-based approaches. In such cases, it is essential to have a clear vision of the type of research you would like to pursue. Additionally, proficiency in English sufficient to read academic papers and experience in programming are considered advantageous.

Based on the themes listed below, specific research topics will be determined in consultation with the faculty, and research will be conducted individually or in groups. If there are research topics that one can actively pursue, themes other than those listed below are also acceptable. Research in planetary science is conducted in collaboration with universities and research institutions not only in Japan but also around the world. Students may be required to travel to universities or research institutions both domestically and internationally to learn research methods and engage in discussions. Additionally, this research group is actively involved in outreach activities. We plan to organize hands-on experiments and lectures for the general public to introduce various phenomena related to our research in the future.

Main Research Targets
・Mars, Venus, exoplanets, Jupiter (including moons), Saturn (including moons), Earth (in the past), (Mercury), and others.

Research Methods
・Numerical simulations
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, test particle simulations, electron transport simulations, photochemical simulations, (hybrid simulations, Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations)
・Spacecraft data analysis
Mars mission MAVEN, Mars mission HOPE/EMM, Saturn mission Cassini, (Mars missions Mars Express, TGO, Jupiter mission Juno, Mercury mission BepiColombo)
* Items in parentheses require preparation before starting the research.

Main Research Topics
・Atmospheric escape studies [Atmospheric evolution studies]
