Course Summary
This seminar will mainly focus on strategy research, both in group and individual. What is strategy? The seminar will explore this through military and security, to search the “essence” of strategy. Goal of this seminar; emphasis on history, acquiring methodologies for problem finding/solving and build the foundation of personal and intellectual strength for future development for years to come after graduation as a leader. This semester, this seminar will deepen faculty's lecture "Diplomacy and Strategy".
Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

1 Acquire a grammar of thought, or methodology, to think independently and continue to learn throughout your life.
2. Explore the liberal arts to become a truly cultured person with dignity and world-class liberal arts.
3. Acquire flexible thinking that there is no single “right answer” in the world.
4 We will cultivate communication skills (listening, speaking, and writing).
5 Each student is free to choose his/her own theme as long as it is related to keywords such as “military and security,” “international relations,” “organizational theory,” “leadership,” and “history.” The format will be determined according to the interests of the students and the number of students enrolled. In all cases, the seminar will include literature subscriptions, discussions, and research presentations (individual research). Literature subscriptions basically link to the course “Diplomacy and Strategy”. At the end of the semester, a research paper(2500 to 3500 words) will be submitted as the final product.

This class is provided former professional naval officer, graduate of the United States Naval Academy class of 1993, have a service career for more that 30 years. He left JMSDF on December 2024 and started education and research in SFC on April 2025. As a surface warfare officer, Dr. Kitagawa commanded destroyer and escort division. He had deployed to Indian Ocean to support Coalition forces after 911, Golan Heights UN Peace Keeping mission in Syria, Counter piracy operation in Djibouti and served as the Defense Attache to the United Kingdom. Domestically, he served various policy positions in Maritime Staff Office, and have rich experience in education and research. He holds PH.D. from SFC. The seminar will provide both academic and professional hybrid view with intellectual excitement throughout the seminar.
