Course Summary

Based on fundamental knowledge of the formation and characteristics of Japan's employment system, as well as an understanding of labor policy issues such as labor shortages, participants will engage in discussions on future labor policies. Each student will research and deepen their analysis of the issues they identify.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

"Working" is not only a means to earn a livelihood but also a means of self-actualization, holding significant value. In today's highly specialized society, various issues surrounding work have become more complex, and addressing the persistent and worsening labor shortage has become an urgent challenge.

With this understanding, students will research and deepen their analysis of labor policy issues, focusing on the formation and characteristics of the Japanese employment system and issues such as labor shortages. They will explore the future direction of labor policy and examine the challenges they identify. The goal is to compile the results into a paper.

The instructor has nearly 20 years of experience working in central government agencies (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Cabinet Secretariat) and local government, where she was involved in the planning and development of various policies to promote gender equality. Drawing on her experience as an active public administrator, they will share key approaches and perspectives essential for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of such projects.
