Course Summary
In this course, students will learn about 'Pattern Language,' a language that fosters good practices, and engage in the cutting-edge expressive activity of delivering it as 'stories.' The first half of the semester will focus on studying 'Pattern Languages of Practices.' In the latter half, students will learn about 'practice-inspiring Stories' and how to craft them, which are innovative ways of presenting patterns as stories. During this semester, students will individually undertake a project to create a work in the form of a manga, picture book, short anime/live-action video, or song that embodies a practice-inspiring story.
Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome
In this course, students will learn about "Pattern Language," a framework that fosters good practices, and engage in the cutting-edge expressive activity of delivering it as "stories."
The first half of the semester will be dedicated to studying "Pattern Languages of Practices." A Pattern Language of Practices encapsulates the essence of good practices within a specific practical field into manageable units called "patterns," which are abstracted, systematized, and verbalized at an appropriate level of abstraction. For instance, the "Presentation Patterns," which summarize the essentials of presentation practice, consist of 34 patterns (practice tips) that support better presentation practices. Similarly, the "Project Design Patterns" comprise 32 patterns that bolster the execution of project planning. Pattern Languages of Practices have also been developed in various other fields such as collaboration (teamwork), creative learning, dialogue, inquiry, education, welfare and care, living, and lifestyles. The first half of the semester aims to deepen understanding of what Pattern Languages of Practices are and to familiarize students with existing pattern languages that have been developed.
In the latter half of the semester, students will learn about innovative ways of presenting pattern content as "stories" through "practice-inspiring Stories." A "practice-inspiring Story" embeds the content of a Pattern Language of Practices into a narrative that enables readers to emotionally grasp the essential aspects of a practice and encourages them to engage in better practices in the future. These stories depict characters engaged in a practice that leads to positive outcomes, allowing readers to vicariously experience and grasp the important aspects of the practice, inspiring them to think, "I want to achieve similar results," or "I want to try it too!" This motivates them to implement similar practices in the real world.
Since the essence of many good practices has already been verbalized through Pattern Languages of Practices, embedding these into narratives allows for the creation of "practice-inspiring Stories." Recently, in the field of Pattern Language, pattern manga, pattern picture books, and pattern songs have been produced and presented. I encourage all students enrolled in this course to challenge themselves in this advanced field by creating quality works.
Participants will choose one or more patterns from the existing Pattern Languages of Practices introduced during the course to embed into their narratives, and will work on projects to create original "practice-inspiring Stories." The modes of expression for these stories will be "manga," "picture book," "short anime/live-action video," or "song." While students are primarily evaluated on creating the entire work themselves, the partial use of generative AI is permitted as follows. If used, students must report on which parts utilized AI and what innovative approaches were taken.
[Creating Entirely by Yourself]
(1) Manga (think up and draw everything by yourself)
(2) Picture book (think up and illustrate everything by yourself)
(3) Anime or live-action short video (think up, draw, shoot, and edit everything by yourself)
(4) Song (write the lyrics and compose the music by yourself)
[Using Generative AI in Creation]
(5) Manga (use generative AI for parts of the process, but do the final touches yourself)
(6) Picture book (use generative AI for parts of the process, but do the final touches yourself)
(7) Anime or live-action short video (use generative AI to create some of the visual materials and do the editing)
(8) Song + Anime or live-action short video (create the song using generative AI and produce a corresponding video either entirely by yourself or using generative AI)
I look forward to seeing the wonderful and attractive works that embody each participant's unique style and flavor.
Please note, in the Spring semester of 2025, classes will be canceled on May 22nd and July 3rd. Make-up classes are scheduled for June 5th (Thursday) during the 1st and 2nd periods. Please ensure you are able to attend on the make-up date and plan accordingly.
