Course Summary

This seminar offers a multifaceted exploration of China from both historical and sociological perspectives. From a historical perspective, we analyze how and why contemporary issues in China have emerged by examining developments over the past hundred years, aiming to uncover the deeper structures of Chinese society. From a sociological perspective, we discuss politics, culture, and the everyday lives of people in local communities, with a focus on the specific characteristics of regional societies.

As this is a small-group seminar, discussions will be centered on the questions raised by student presenters, and students will receive guidance on developing research perspectives and methods for investigating relevant literature. Additionally, time is also allocated for individual research presentations, during which students receive thorough instruction on selecting a research topic, collecting data, and writing academic papers.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

Research Seminar B2 primarily aims to develop students' abilities to analyze materials and write academic papers. This seminar is divided into two parts: the first half focuses on reading Chinese historical materials, local gazetteers, and newspaper reports; the second half centers on individual research projects, where students learn how to find their research questions, how to review existing scholarship, and what methods to use in writing their papers.
