Course Summary

This is a seminar that explores the current situation and challenges of "refugees and immigrants" in Japanese society, as well as their potential, while also conducting practical efforts and research to improve society. It focuses not only on the individuals who are refugees and immigrants, but also emphasizes the perspective of how society as a whole can transform, or needs to transform.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

In this seminar, we will explore the current situation, challenges, and potential of "refugees and immigrants" in Japanese society, while engaging in practices and research to improve this society. Specifically, we will read and discuss literature to deepen our understanding of practical and research backgrounds, and carry out group and/or individual projects both within and outside of the seminar period. In doing so, we will not only focus on the individuals who are refugees and immigrants but also emphasize the perspective of how society as a whole can or needs to transform. Through the practices and research in this study group, we aim to gain a deep understanding of refugees and immigrants, develop critical thinking skills, and cultivate a comprehensive and meta-perspective necessary in this field. One of our goals is also to enhance intercultural communication skills through discussions from diverse viewpoints.

The facilitator of this study group (Tomono) is both a practitioner and a researcher, having been involved in refugee support for over 10 years through NGOs and other organizations.
