Course Summary
In this lecture, we will study intellectual thinking methods and academic research methods for conducting qualitative research that captures the essence of good design and practice and describes it in the form of a pattern language.
Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome
In this lecture, we will study intellectual thinking methods and academic research methods for conducting qualitative research that captures the essence of good design and practice and describes it in the form of a pattern language.
Originally devised in the field of architectural design and later applied and popularized in software development, pattern language is a method for supporting "creation." It is now used as a method for researching "practices" in various fields such as education, organizational activities, daily practices, and lifestyles. Such research is categorized as "qualitative research," but it has unique aspects (phenomenological essential aspects) that significantly differ from traditional qualitative research methods. Therefore, when compiling research results and presenting them academically, it is necessary to be conscious of our research methods, construct a proper argument, and demonstrate it. In this lecture, we will explore these specific methods together, aiming to enable you to apply them in your own research.
It is important to note that although the course title and the titles of individual lectures may seem to deal with general research methods, the content of this lecture is specifically focused on the creation of pattern languages. The literature and papers read, and the points of focus and discussion will all pertain to pattern language. While this does not prevent students who do not study pattern language from taking the course, it is extremely specialized, and it is important to understand this before enrolling.
This course requires extensive reading, thinking, and writing outside of class hours. Initially, you are required to purchase and read a designated specialist book on pattern language before the first session. Each week, you must write and submit a "reflection" on the day of the class, in addition to pre-class and post-class assignments. Furthermore, you are also required to read designated papers (journal articles, conference papers, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations that utilize pattern language) and submit mini-reports on the design (structure) of these studies. Please understand the extensive reading and numerous assignments involved in studying pattern language research before enrolling.
For the spring term of 2025, there will be no classes on May 23 and July 4. Make-up classes are scheduled for June 6 (Friday), during the 1st and 2nd periods. Please confirm your availability for the make-up classes and include them in your schedule.
Prior to the first session, please purchase the following textbooks: "The Timeless Way of Building," "Tomoni Ikiru Kotoba," and "Sogo Seisaku Gaku no Hohoronteki Tenkai." You are required to read from the beginning to the end of Chapter 12 in "The Timeless Way of Building," from the start up to page 21 in "Tomoni Ikiru Kotoba," and Chapter 2 as well as the introductory talk in "Sogo Seisaku Gaku no Hohoronteki Tenkai." Please complete these readings before the first class, and bring them to the first class.
