Course DescriptionThe Seminar is central to activities at SFC where faculty members and students work together on a diversity of issues as a prelude to the Graduation Project. At SFC, students do not merely learn answers to given problems. Education at SFC aims to nurture and send out leaders of the future who are able to identify problems and create methods of resolving them. Through participation in such research, students work on real problems in society and gain a high level of expertise, and with this in hand, they embark on their Graduation Project that will be their "fruit of designing the future" as well as a personal proposal as they advance towards the future as individuals.

Course Summary

This seminar aims to acquire the skills and knowledge to quantitatively analyze various issues in contemporary society using data and econometric methods. This seminar is held jointly with Makiko Nakamuro's seminar .

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

The purpose of this seminar is to develop analytical skills for economic, social, medical, educational, and policy issues using applied micro-econometric methodologies.

Research is conducted mainly by individuals or in small groups, and the topics are "open-ended". You will research what you are interested in or are aware of the issues, but the starting point should be an empirical analysis using applied micro-econometric methodologies and data.

Each meeting will focus on reports of individual research. There will be four sections: research proposal, literature review, summary statistics, and estimation, all of which will require you to present the progress of your own research. We will follow up with you in sub-seminars on how to use statistical software such as R and Stata.

The final presentation will be open to students and alumni, as well as members of society and the media, and an outside audience will be invited to attend. It is customary to do this together with students from other universities' economics departments (e.g., Prof. Fumio Ohtake's seminar at Osaka University), with generous prizes awarded to those who perform well.

Students must give a high quality presentation at each meeting when it is their turn, and submit presentation materials or a paper at the final report, or they will not receive credit.
