授業科目の内容・目的・方法・到達目標
This course will overview the economic history of the United States from the colonial era to the present. We will study the features and development of the American economy and examine the major events that have transformed it over its history. Also, the course provides an in-depth analysis on how markets, institutions and government policies have evolved in the U.S. and how they have contributed to successful economic growth. An important objective of this course is to help students draw insight from the American past to inform various current economic issues, and understand why the U.S. has become such an economic powerhouse today.
The course is organized chronologically. In each period, we examine the factors that have contributed to the course of development such as trade and commercial policy, payments and monetary systems, capital movements and labor migration, and relate these to the record of American economic expansion. Through the course, students will gain a more detailed knowledge of U.S. history, learn economic concepts and variables and their application to history, and develop a sense of the ways in which history allows us to better understand the present.
