Course Summary
This seminar will provide the academic training to write individual research paper by using microdata and the methods of applied econometrics. Research topic will be chosen by each student.
Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome
The purpose of this workshop is to develop scientific analytical methods for economic, social, educational, and policy analysis using applied microeconometric methodologies and data. Research is conducted mainly by individuals or in small groups, and the topics are "open-ended". You will research what you are interested in and are aware of the issues, but the starting point should be an empirical analysis using applied microeconometric methodologies and data. We will follow up with you in sub-seminars on how to use statistical software such as R and STATA. The final presentation will be held at the Mita campus, inviting an outside audience and open to students and alumni, as well as members of society and the media. It is customary to do this together with students from the economics departments of other universities (such as the research groups of Professor Fumio Ohtake of Osaka University and Professor Hideo Ohwani of Waseda University), and the winners of the best grades will be awarded luxurious prizes. If you do not give a high quality presentation at each research group when it is your turn, and submit both presentation materials and a paper at the final report, you will not receive credit. (1) Students must have a clear awareness of their own problems in society and the economy, and be willing to acquire the skills to analyze those problems using the theories and methods of economics. (3) Students are not required to take data analysis courses, but those who have already studied data analysis courses or have experience using statistical software for analysis will have an advantage. In addition, students will be expected to read a lot of English literature in the course, including circular readings and reviews of previous studies. (4) As many of you have already heard the reputation in various places, our study group is a "room of spirit and time" (see Dragon Ball) that provides a place for significantly rigorous academic training. We would like to invite those who are prepared to engage firmly in research to join us. (5) Those who wish to do so will have the opportunity to present their research results externally in the media, accompany government councils and symposiums, and serve as RAs (travel expenses and salary paid) on research projects conducted in Japan and abroad. This seminar will be held together with Professor Koryu Sato's seminar.
