講義概要

Efforts to preserve the global environment are one of the greatest challenges of the present age. Thus, it is inevitable to have a considerable involvement in environmental issues, irrespective of the area of specialization. The field of environment is extremely broad. It involves a wide range of stages from the earth to life to human society. For this reason, subjects related to the environment are currently being segmented and specialized.

With this context, this course helps the students to learn specialized knowledge in the field of extremely wide sectors related to environment in order to have a solid foundation of this diverse topic. A comprehensive review of a wide range of environmental fields from a unified viewpoint of science and technology is provided. This helps in deepening knowledge while viewing the entire environmental field, even if the student advances to one specific areas for his/her research or profession. In each lesson, we will take up specific cases, that can easily be understood with view point of science and technology application in the field of envirnmental management.

授業科目の内容・目的・方法・到達目標

To understand the complexity of environmental issues, we need to focus on the inter-linkages, and look at it on a holistic perspctives. To do that, it is improtant to understand disciplianry perspectives, and how different disciplines and expertise address environmental problems. The purpose of the lecture is to look at the environmental issues on holitic basis utilizing different disciplines and expertise, and to obtain the “big-pictute of environmental management.”

The lecture will target to enhance student’s environmental literacy, and to get them interested in different sets of knowledge base and techniques to solve complex environmetnal problems. We will take up a typical case, introduce the approaches used for such cases, and make them understand their effectiveness and problems.

This course will be provided by a team of faculty members (mostly from SFC, with certain presence of gruest faculty). The faculty members would introduce appropriate literature in each lecture.

Farmers have managed the landscape for a long time. It is secondary nature and maintains species richness. Recently many Satoyama have been abandoned due to depopulation and aging problem. The underuse problem becomes one of the most critical issues in biodiversity conservation in Japan.

How to Represent the World without Ends
概要
We are able to access information regarding for global science and global geopolitics. And there have been discussions on how to represent invisible phenomena in our complicated world. In design field, info graphics is one of key topics when we discuss about the issue. Besides There have been very few discussions about representation mechanism itself for spherical surface. The lecture introduces two practical projects done by the lecturer. The project is new world map projection. And the other is the large globe display. Both can provide better rendition of our planet.
