Course DescriptionThe Seminar is central to activities at SFC where faculty members and students work together on a diversity of issues as a prelude to the Graduation Project. At SFC, students do not merely learn answers to given problems. Education at SFC aims to nurture and send out leaders of the future who are able to identify problems and create methods of resolving them. Through participation in such research, students work on real problems in society and gain a high level of expertise, and with this in hand, they embark on their Graduation Project that will be their "fruit of designing the future" as well as a personal proposal as they advance towards the future as individuals.

Course Summary

There are people in the community who are unknowingly facing challenges such as childcare, nursing care, health, isolation, etc., and who wish they had someone to talk to, someone to consult, or someone to help them. There are people in the community who can contribute to improving and resolving these issues, including people with a wealth of experience and knowledge, but without opportunities to connect with these people, these issues will not be improved. In order to improve this situation, we need a place in the community where we can connect with people and provide opportunities to connect with people who can contribute to improving issues and problems. It is not enough just to have a place to stay, but it is also important to create a place where people can get to know and care for each other, and a place where people want to go.
This Kenkyukai will be carried out with Prof. Uchiyama's Kenkyukai. We will provide opportunities to participate in the management and planning of local places to stay in the Shonan area, including the area surrounding SFC, in cooperation and collaboration with residents' groups and government agencies. The regular Kenkyukai time will be used for planning and preparation of community activities at the fieldwork sites. For those whose schedules do not allow them to participate in community fieldwork, it is also possible for them to work as a group or individually on a practical project on a specific theme, such as the connection between sports or art and society.

Each study group will deepen discussions on their own topic and conduct field activities. Some examples of issues carried out in the past were; Wellbeing of the elderly in the community","Improving learning environment for long-term hospitalized children or children in community, Students who are interested in such topics are welcome. The seminar is open for diverse people but strong comittment is required.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

The course will provide opportunities to experience the role of community support in cooperation and collaboration with residents' groups and government agencies in the Shonan area, including the area around SFC.
There are two types of activities for participants: (1) those who participate in a community center where local people have already been involved in activities and provide a new opening for participants, and (2) those who establish a new community center (place) where there are no community activities and start with planning, publicity, and gathering staff to run the center. In either case, the participants will be asked to conduct fieldwork outside of the workshop hours in cooperation with local stakeholders and participate in activities as members of the planning and management team.
Through these opportunities, the program aims to help participants realize, through hands-on experience, the current situation in which “places and people are needed to improve the situation of weak community ties,” understand what perspectives are necessary for planning, managing, and sustaining community activities, and gain experience that will enable them to participate as leaders when the opportunity to participate in such activities arises in the future. The goal of this program is for participants to gain experience that will enable them to participate as leaders when the opportunity to participate in such activities arises in the future.
In addition, through fieldwork and practice, students will be able to understand the following
(1) Characteristics of the community and residents who participate in community activities
2) Know-how in planning and managing community activities in which residents participate
3) What is needed to change the awareness and behavior of local residents
Furthermore, students will develop the ability to summarize and present these practical activities in the form of research and project reports.
