Course Summary

Kenkyukai 1 "Reserach and Practices on Wellbeing"
This Kenkyukai (seminar) focuses on people and communities. We integrate various social science approaches, and conducts research to solve problems surrounding healthcare. In this Kenkyukai.
The word "wellbeing" encompasses diverse concepts such as social health, subjective wellbeing, and a sense of self-worth and achievement. Research that contributes to people's wellbeing includes a variety of practical research approaches, including quantitative and qualitative research, mixed methods, fieldwork, and CBPR (commnity based participatory reserach). This workshop, “Research and Practice on Wellbeing,” will focus on methodologies for researching various practices that can have an impact on people's wellbeing. We plan to learn about the differences between qualitative and quantitative research paradigms and procedures, and how to implement mixed-methods practices that leverage their strengths.
The spring semester of 2025 will be held jointly with Professor Eiko Uchiyama's Kenkyukai 1.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

For example, many people today with serious health issues and difficulty of living often have multiple social, economic, and environmental issues. In order to solve such health issues, it is not enough to simply convey the correct knowledge (evidence) to the person concerned, but it is also necessary to encourage the people around the person concerned, emper the community, and even develop policies to change the social environment. It is also necessary to emphasize the importance of the issue to stakeholders such as those in charge.
The study group consists of reading sessions and research presentations. In the reading sessions, participants critically read books on research methods and research papers using various methods, and learn how to bring their practices to fruition as research with actual examples.
We welcome those who are interested in health and welfare and eager to learn strategies, skills, methods, and approaches to understand and collaborate with diverse actors to solve people's health problems.
