Course Summary
In this research group, we conduct cybercrime prevention education and research with a focus on volunteer educational activities (workshops) where students teach internet safety to elementary, middle, and high school students. Additionally, we explore and study effective policies related to various issues concerning societal safety.
Furthermore, our research group is unique in that it not only engages in research activities related to cybercrime prevention education and social safety policy, but also provides an opportunity to “apply” the knowledge gained through individual research by offering special classes to elementary, middle, and high school students.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome
In this research group, we conduct cybercrime prevention education and research with a focus on volunteer educational activities (workshops) where students teach internet safety to elementary, middle, and high school students. Additionally, we explore and study effective policies related to various issues concerning societal safety.
There are many problematic cases that occur on the internet. Bullying on SNS; innocent tweets or images that end up in disclosure of names and addresses; or dissemination of private images that were initially shared with someone you had special interest. Some students may have experienced such a case, or have seen or heard it happening to close friends.
Young students in elementary/middle/high schools can easily access Internet on a daily basis, through the spread of smartphones and other devices. There are many cases where young students are involved in troubles as described above. In some cases, they become victims, but in other cases they can easily become perpetrators as well. Although young students need information on the safety use of Internet, responses by parents and schools are not enough.
In this seminar, students, who have close sense to those children in elementary/middle/high schools, offer workshops on internet safety. Also, students conduct analytic research based on results of workshops in order to get insight on network security. By carrying out these two factors, students will be able to see both theory and practice. Students can contribute directly to society through such practical activities, which makes this seminar unique.
Students are expected to learn broad and latest knowledge, such as laws and institutions regarding cybersecurity, situation on cybercrimes and cyberattacks, cases in which young students are involved in troubles using internet, contents of awareness raising activities by other institutions/organizations/experts. Also, students are expected to think about how they would be able to convey to young students the necessary and important information effectively according to the their age. Furthermore, based on the feedback obtained from the activities, students are expected to further evolve the methodology.
This seminar is also designed to identify various issues and problems related to public safety, i.e. crime prevention, organized crime, cybercrime, terrorism, stalking, domestic
violence, child abuse, child delinquency etc., and to explore, together with members of this seminar, effective policies and solutions to deal with them. The purpose of this seminar is to deepen understandings through reading basic reference materials and making presentations among students.
During this seminar, we may invite some guests to have lectures on their fields of expertise. Also, we may have an opprtunity to visit prefectural police headquarters or other places. Students are required to pick up basic reference materials related to each individual's field of interest and make presentations.
