授業科目の内容・目的・方法・到達目標
Overview
What do companies have to deal with when crossing national borders? In this workshop, we take a broad approach to learning about and discussing different aspects, challenges and opportunities of global strategy. As globalization is expanding, all countries are host to foreign firms and not only large multinational companies take part in global strategy. Therefore, this workshop is valuable not only for students who wish to work in an international setting, but for any student that wants to have a grasp of the modern business environment.
We will focus on questions of strategy and organization, rather than issues or activities related to leadership, psychology, operations management or finance/accounting.
Intended learning outcomes
(1) Provide students with the necessary tools to understand and analyze global strategy
(2) Have students use these tools in class discussions and an independent project
This workshop will be conducted fully in English, which remains the language of international business. While listening and reading skills are necessary to take in readings, lectures and class discussions, speaking skills are all the more important to actively participate in the workshop. However, students will not be graded on their vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation. Instead, focus lies on students' ability to reason and convey thoughts.
Teaching method
There are three main types of sessions for this workshop:
Lectures (2-6, 8-9): In the lectures, the instructor introduces topics related to global strategy. Lectures correspond mostly to learning outcome (1) above, where the core concepts of global strategy are explained and discussed to gain a common understanding.
Case discussions: (3-7, 9): Cases are documents describing real-world challenges faced by international companies. Students are expected to have read cases in preparation for these sessions. During the case discussions, the instructor will introduce the case and ask questions that are then addressed by students - not as a quiz or exam, but as an open discussion about how the case challenges could be solved. Thus, case discussions are about learning outcome (2).
Group work: (1-2, 7-8, 11-14): Group presentations are central to the GPP workshops. In this workshop, we aim not only to apply frameworks on examples but to generate new knowledge about global strategy. We will start to work on ideas in groups early on, which are further polished during mid-term presentations and rehearsals before final presentations.
