Course Summary

Soft power is the opposite of hard power. Rather than relying on coercion, threats, or material rewards, soft power is the ability to influence others by winning their sympathy and gaining their “hearts and minds.” Originally developed as a concept in international relations, soft power refers to the influence exerted by culture, values, and institutions, in contrast to military or economic might.

Even in the conflicts over Gaza and Ukraine, we have witnessed battles over narratives and perceptions—struggles to claim moral legitimacy in the eyes of the world. These are quintessential examples of soft power at work. The capacity to build trust and empathy, to attract supporters and allies, and to appeal to public opinion is essential not only in politics or civil society but also in business and interpersonal relationships.

In this seminar, we aim to explore and examine the nature of soft power across a range of fields and layers, seeking to understand how it operates in diverse contexts.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

This seminar is not a lecture-based course, but a forum in which each participant brings in their own topic of interest. The aim is to explore and deepen our understanding by identifying common threads among these diverse themes through the lens of the concept of soft power.

Participants are expected to have already acquired a basic understanding of soft power. It is also assumed that each student is engaged in a research project or practical activity to which they are strongly committed.
