Course Summary

The laboratory will deal with the tension and complication of international relations in the Middle East.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

In recent years, the Middle East region, to the detriment of nations, is increasingly viewed by the international community as a source of instability, which is a stark departure from its traditional role of being considered as a reliable source of energy for the global economy. One unfortunate example which as caught attention of the international community is the Israel-Palestine conflict that erupted in October 2023 and its regional spillover. We have witnessed the conflict reach Lebanon, Syria, and eventually Iran when it was attacked by Israel in June 2025. The region has become unstable as ever before.
Turmoil in the Middle East today poses various challenges to the world and the current quagmire is a result of accumulated traditional and historical elements of instability, associated with the more recent negative effects of power politics, conflicts, etc. that have been undertaken by regional and non-regional actors. With the information technology available to us today, despite the geographical distance with the Middle East and Japan, we are able to easily access open-source information, threat and thrum, almost immediately. Taking advantage of this environment, from the view point of international relations, security, realism, etc., why not engage in objectively scrutinizing the various issues in the Middle East?
For the Fall semester of 2025, the main themes that are to be debated will include Israel's war on Iran, Saudi Arabia's struggle for economic development, and Qatar's indigenous foreign policy.
