Course Summary

Second Language Teaching & Research: Ecological & Sociocultural Approaches to Games-Based Learning

This course will explore the interaction between sociocultural theories of language acquisition and the learning environment with a focus on games- and task-based language teaching. Adopting a seminar-style/discussion-based approach, students will engage in current and relative theories of learning as they relate to both teaching practices and research. Topics include mediation, development, affect, semiotics, activity theory, values-realizing, and dynamic assessment, among others.

This class is intended for those interested in second language teaching and those who are interested in and want to work in the field of applied linguistics as language educators and researchers. Prior knowledge of second language acquisition, teaching, or other relevant fields is recommended but not required.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• Apply theories of sociocultural learning to existing approaches of task-based learning
• Design, adapt, and adopt task-based materials for second or foreign language learning and teaching purposes
• Read, discuss, and display knowledge of current theories in language acquisition and pedagogy
