Course Summary

The aim of the seminar is to deepen the understanding of Islam in Japanese society and to implement projects aimed at coexistence with Muslims living in Japan and those visiting Japan as tourists.
Currently, the number of Muslims in the world is about 2 billion, and one out of every four people in the world is a Muslim, and the population is increasing. The number of Muslims living in Japan to study or to work and the number of Muslims visiting Japan for sightseeing are also increasing year by year. On the other hand, the image of Islam in Japan is not always good, and Japanese people do not fully understand Islam. In this seminar, students will deepen the understanding of the teachings of Islam and the religious practices of Muslims through literature reading, while conducting fieldwork and joint projects to build a network with Muslims living in Japan, connect Japanese society and Muslims, and consider new forms of coexistence in Japan.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

The aim of this seminar is to consider and practice coexistence with diverse people in Japan including Muslims, while learning and deepening understanding of Islam.
Currently, the number of Muslims in the world is about 2 billion, and one out of every four people in the world is a Muslim. Since the population is increasing, it is said that the time will come in the near future when one out of every three people in the world will be a Muslim. The number of Muslims living in Japan to study or to work and the number of Muslims visiting Japan for sightseeing are also increasing year by year. On the other hand, the image of Islam in Japan is not always good, and Japanese people do not fully understand Islam. In this seminar, students will deepen the understanding of the teachings of Islam and the religious practices of Muslims through literature readings, while conducting fieldwork and joint projects to build a network with Muslims living in Japan, connect Japanese society and Muslims, and consider new forms of coexistence in Japan.
We are currently working on the following projects; including a tourism project to survey the acceptance of inbound Muslim tourists and make proposals to local governments; an Indonesia project to survey mosques and communities of Indonesian Muslims living in Japan and conduct exchange activities; and a Mother's Tree project to hold events to bring together foreign Muslim mothers and Japanese mothers on the theme of child-rearing and childbirth and promote exchange between them. We will also hold a National Muslim Meeting and present at Bangaku Exhibition (ORF). We plan to continue and develop various activities this semester.
