Course DescriptionThe Seminar is central to activities at SFC where faculty members and students work together on a diversity of issues as a prelude to the Graduation Project. At SFC, students do not merely learn answers to given problems. Education at SFC aims to nurture and send out leaders of the future who are able to identify problems and create methods of resolving them. Through participation in such research, students work on real problems in society and gain a high level of expertise, and with this in hand, they embark on their Graduation Project that will be their "fruit of designing the future" as well as a personal proposal as they advance towards the future as individuals.

Course Summary

SFC kotan: Aynu Language and Aynu Oral Literature
We will learn and practice the Aynu language and Aynu oral literature, and explore the anthropological thinking (cultural anthropology, social anthropology, linguistic anthropology) behind these topics. Students can freely develop their individual research themes and topics, and those researching the Aynu language and Aynu oral literature will receive strategic support from this research laboratory.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

In this seminar, we learn the Aynu language, realise field visits to Hokkaido, and learn from (and engage in) the efforts to revitalise the language, and delve in to the world of Aynu culture through their oral narratives. All students participating in this research seminar will learn the language, but their personal research projects can span other topics. We welcome students interested in fieldwork-based social science and humanities, language revitalisation, and literary studies.

This semester, we will be reading David Graeber et al.'s The Dawn of Everything. We will also continue Aynu language learning through direct method communal learning method, and examine and learn to chant the Aynu divine chants (each student will be in charge of one chant).
