Course Summary

The main aim of the German courses at SFC is for students to acquire the skills necessary to talk about themselves in German. Video sketches that introduce the German language to students through everyday situations at SFC form the core of the class content. After the one year of intensive 1 and 2 courses, students will be able to express their opinions and talk about their daily lives in German. Furthermore, at the intensive course 3 level, the setting of the sketches will move on to the German-speaking region. In the videos, topics of regionality and local culture are covered, allowing students to learn expressions and strategies that are important for communication in German. After completing intensive course 3, students can further improve their German skills through the skill and contents courses. Students are also encouraged to participate in the German overseas language program. Further opportunities for overseas study include a one-year exchange program organized by the university as well as scholarship opportunities for short-term fieldwork. Steadily continuing to study German based on an enjoyable and fulfilling program will enable students to acquire practical German skills that can be used in the real world.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

The primary goal of the German language education at SFC is to teach students practical German focused on communication. In the intensive 3 course, students will aim toward being able to communicate in various situations encountered in German-speaking regions, as well as to discuss abstract ideas and social issues.
After completing the intensive 3 course, students will reach a level of language proficiency equivalent to CEFR A2 to B1.
The textbook used in this course is the “Module 2,” a textbook designed specifically for students taking German at SFC. This textbook was developed by faculty members of the SFC German department over a long period of time and has been used as teaching material at SFC.

Method of Evaluation

Credits are given based on the results from regular short tests, final examination, group presentation project, tandem project with german students, motivation and attendance. Students will fail if they are absent for more than one fourth of the semester.

Generative AI Policy for Classes

In this course, the use of generative AI is partially permitted. Specifically, AI may be used in the following situations:
・Assistance with brainstorming and the initial planning stage
・Considering and organizing the structure of assignments
・Supplementary support for research purposes (however, students are responsible for verifying the accuracy of the information)

Please note the following points:
・If AI is used, this must be clearly stated in the submitted work (e.g., “An outline was created using Gemini”).
・Unauthorized copying of AI-generated text or the use of information with unclear sources may be considered academic misconduct.
・When writing reports or completing assignments, independent thinking is required, and the use of AI is prohibited.
