Course Summary

The Kenkyukai to explore the applied practice of "landscape thinking" advocated by Hajime Ishikawa. Students will practice applied landscape thinking through exercises, individual research, and participation in projects such as joint research and commissioned work being undertaken in the laboratory.

Course Description/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

The goal is to develop the ability to read and understand the events that surround us, including cities, and to be able to make proposals to them, and to acquire the perspective, sense, and skills to create concrete objects that connect everyday/local things and wide-area/geographical things for this purpose.

Place, space, environment, landscape... The "here" in which we live is called in various ways depending on the scale at which it is referred to. Each scale has its own area of construction technology, but in this workshop we will not necessarily specialize in one scale and master the technology and knowledge of that scale, but rather, we will make some proposals while observing and considering the landscape from a small place at our feet to a national scale across the country. Proposals, in other words, are design.

Proposals, in other words, are design. The "geoscience" set forth here is not about abstract concepts or spaces, but about the design of concrete places and landscapes. However, "altering" a place or landscape as an act of construction is not the only kind of design. It can also be the design of a new way of looking at things, or the discovery of new beauty in a landscape that was not previously an object of love.

The basic element and thinking tool necessary for these practices is "landscape". The faculty member in charge graduated from the Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Agriculture, and has long been involved in design practice in the field of landscape design, while experimenting with new expressions using digital maps and other tools. This workshop does not necessarily aim only to acquire professional knowledge and skills to train landscape designers, but we always think about applying "landscape thinking," the thinking that comes from the perspective of designing landscapes, to everyday spaces.

We welcome students who are willing to walk around and work with their hands.
