Course Contents/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) is one of the most important landscape painters in the history of Western art. With his masterful technique, he captured the many faces of nature, from stormy seascapes to the peaks of the Alps, as well as historical landscapes. His work is renowned for its innovative depiction of landscapes bathed in light and air.
Born in London, Turner became a full member of the Royal Academy at an early age. He travelled extensively throughout Britain and Europe. He also produced numerous prints, including illustrations for poetry collections and topographical publications.
In this course, we will re-examine Turner's life and art in the light of the latest research and get to the heart of his work. Students will learn how to look at landscape painting and, through a monographic approach, learn the basics of artist research, one of the methodologies of art history.
