Course Contents/Objectives/Teaching Method/Intended Learning Outcome

This course must be taken together with Environmental Economics b. This year, we plan to conduct reverse instruction, combining (1) on-demand lecture videos and (2) real-time zoom sessions each week. For details, please see the syllabus to be distributed on the first day of the class (or posted on the Canvas website).
The content of the course is as follows:
Environmental economics is a branch of modern economics that studies economic behaviors of agents that have environmental consequences, and by doing so, attempts to help guide future environmental and resource policies. This course is designed to acquaint students with an intermediate-level knowledge of such field. The objectives of the course are for you to:
・Establish an understanding of economic principles that guide us in the study of environmental and resource problems --- i.e., we learn why environmental and resource issues occur? how economic incentives matter?;
・Learn how different policy instruments, such as emissions taxes, green subsidies, and cap-and-trade programs, work differently under different situations;
・Learn key topics, tools, and models of interest to environmental practitioners.
